You Can’t Live With Your Parents

May 12, 2018 by Genbatto Leave a Comment

This may or may not apply depending on whether or not you still live with your parents. You have either Grown up and moved out from the shelter of your folks or you haven’t. If you are out on your own then you can disregard this part of the course. If not then listen up.

You need to move out of the home before you can become an adult. If you are still living under your parent’s umbrella then you are a child. By moving out you gain independence, self-respect and excellent life skills. It is an exercise in personal growth in itself when you first move out of the home. Not to mention it is a lot more attractive to the opposite gender if you are living out on your own.

When Is The Right Time

I understand that there are legal issues about moving out and you can’t just go and do it if you are underage. Despite the fact that you might be physically, mentally and emotionally mature the government will keep you chained to your parents.

However, once you hit 18 go for it. It is hard financially.  But you will figure it out along the way. Don’t let money be an excuse.

The earlier you go the better it is because you learn the most. You could wait a couple of years but you then would be putting off personal growth experiences that you could have at 18 until you are 20. It’s best to throw yourself into the deep end as soon as possible. That way you learn to swim quicker.

The longer you stay at home the harder it is to leave. Cheap rent, someone to do the housework and a weight off your mind are tempting. But don’t stay longer than you have to. I know people who have said they would just stay 1 year. 5 years later they are still there.

It is unfair to your parents to stay too long. They put their hopes and dreams on hold when they raised you. You took up all their time so they didn’t have any for themselves. Let them live their lives again.

The Personal Growth Experiences

When you live at home your parents are a crutch. You don’t have to completely fend for yourself in the big wide world. You can lean on them for support. By moving out it’s suddenly you vs the world with no one there to hold your hand.

It’s like riding a bike without training wheels for the first time. Quickly you realize you are quite capable and wondered why you didn’t cut the cord sooner.

A person can’t be a person until they are economically independent. Once you move from dependent child to independent adult a whole new set of doors will open up for you. The feeling of power and control over your life is quite amazing.

Moving out means you will pick up valuable domestic skills. You need to learn these eventually so the sooner the better. If you didn’t already know how you will learn how to:

• Cook
• Do your laundry
• Iron
• Clean a toilet
• Rent a house/apartment
• Pay bills
• Buy the groceries
• Plan a budget

Just Do It

This is a big step and it is easy to make a lot of excuses as to why you shouldn’t do it. It’s easy to convince yourself that it isn’t the right time or you don’t have enough money or that your parents don’t mind if you stay.

Cut the excuses. Truly authentic people do not live with their parents. Acknowledge the excuses you make, plan around them but just pull the pin and do it anyway. You will figure it out as you go along.
